Ban On Sale of State Lands: Lots of Court Actions and Judgment Debts Looming - Minority Cautions Presidency

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has urged President John Dramani Mahama to, with immediate effect, lift the ban on the sale of public lands, highlighting its imminent implications should the embargo continue.
This statement was made by the Member of Parliament for Subin, Kofi Obiri Yeboah, on Monday, July 14, 2025, who argued that the decision of the President would result in huge judgment debt if the decision is not suspended immediately.
While acknowledging the good intentions behind the directive, the minority stressed that the ban could affect legitimate landholders and corporate institutions.
“Although the directive by the President to halt all state transactions may have been issued with good intentions, it may pose serious challenges.
This directive deprives the private investor, both individuals and corporate bodies to use their legally acquired lands to secure loans from the bank,” Kofi Obiri Yeboah declared.
The minority further maintained that the government must reverse its directive, as it genuinely believes that the private sector is the engine of growth.
“If care is not taken, the state may be saddled with a lot of court actions and judgment debt,” he remarked.
Sequel to the submission of the Subin lawmaker, MP for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, re-echoed the call, disclosing how many landguards have taken over public lands.
It is recalled that President Mahama, after assuming office on January 7, 2025, directed the immediate suspension of all activities related to the sale, lease, or processing of transactions involving State and public lands.
However, the MPs also expressed concern about potential revenue losses to the state, noting that the Lands Commission generates significant income through stamp duties, consent fees, and lease preparations, all of which contribute to the Consolidated Fund.
