Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has shared that his rise to fame came from years of hard work and self-learning in Ghana, not from traveling abroad.

In an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday, March 11, monitored by entertainment journalist Joseph Owusu Worae, he denied claims that he went to Jamaica early in his career to learn dancehall.

Shatta Wale said that stepping “off the scene” for almost ten years was intentional, allowing him to focus on music production, beat-making, and understanding the music industry. He stressed that all this time was spent in Ghana, studying music and carefully planning his career.
I took time to learn music production and understand the music industry so I could navigate it well. I was still in Ghana,” he added.

When asked about the origin of the Jamaica narrative, the dancehall star said, “Yeah, you know, what I was learning was so fast that people thought that I traveled elsewhere to learn.”

Shatta Wale also detailed how his training was largely self-taught, relying heavily on online resources. “I was in a small room. I learned the beats all by myself, on my own, on the internet. Anytime I didn’t understand anything about music production, I went online to study. I learnt everything on my own with the help of the internet,” he said.
