Mahama; Expanding Energy Access and moving to clear Energy remain critical issues

President John Dramani Mahama has said that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plays a vital role in this transition to cleaner energy sources.

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that expanding energy access and transitioning to cleaner energy sources remain some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today.

He made the remarks on Thursday, March 12, when he commissioned a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessel for Sahara Energy Resources in Ulsan, South Korea. According to him, the vessel marks an important step toward strengthening Ghana’s energy security and improving infrastructure within the country’s energy sector.

President Mahama, who is currently on a working visit to South Korea, explained that the addition of the LPG vessel will significantly improve Ghana’s LPG supply chain. He described the project as a demonstration of the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing energy needs.

The President noted that the vessel, named MT Asharami Ghana, will operate under the Ghanaian flag and will be dedicated to supplying LPG to the country. He said the vessel is expected to enhance supply security, improve reliability, and help stabilize prices through more efficient transportation and logistics.

Mr. Mahama further emphasized that LPG plays a critical role in Africa’s transition to cleaner energy. He explained that for millions of households across the continent, LPG offers a safer and cleaner alternative to traditional fuels such as charcoal, firewood and kerosene, while also helping to reduce deforestation and indoor air pollution.

He commended Sahara Energy Group, West African Gas Limited (WAGL), and other partners involved in the project for their commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure in the region. According to him, partnerships like these are essential in bridging infrastructure gaps and unlocking sustainable economic opportunities across Africa.

The state-of-the-art dual-fuel refrigerated LPG carrier is expected to expand LPG transport capacity in the West African sub-region and support the growing demand for cleaner energy solutions.
President Mahama concluded by stressing that strategic investments and partnerships are vital in securing Ghana’s energy future and promoting sustainable development across the African continent.
