PURC Slashes Electricity Prices by 4.81%, Water Bills Drop 3.06%.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has informed consumers of electricity and water that the existing electricity and water tariffs have been reviewed downwards to take effect from April 01, 2026.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced reductions in electricity and water tariffs, with electricity rates down by an average of 4.81% and water tariffs reduced by 3.06%.

According to the Commission, these changes are part of its regular quarterly review process, which aims to adjust tariffs to reflect developments within each quarter. The reviews take into account key factors that affect the operations of utility service providers (USPs), including the Ghana Cedi-US Dollar exchange rate, domestic inflation, electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel—primarily natural gas used in thermal power plants.

The quarterly adjustments are designed to maintain the real value of tariffs, ensuring that utility providers remain financially sustainable while also considering the impact on consumers.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 13, PURC also revealed that, for the first time, it has introduced a commercial tariff for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging to support the country’s transition to green energy.
The Commission explained the factors influencing this quarter’s tariff changes:
Ghana Cedi-US Dollar Exchange Rate: The projected weighted average exchange rate for Q2 2026 is GHS11.1931/US$1, reflecting a 6.78% drop compared to the previous quarter’s rate of GHS12.0067/US$1.

This projection is based on the three-month actual inter-bank average from December 1, 2025, to February 28,2026.Inflation Rate: PURC applied a three-month average inflation rate of 4.17% for the second quarter, representing a significant 47.87% decline from the previous quarter.Cost of Natural Gas: The weighted average cost of gas (WACOG) used for electricity generation was USD8.0988/MMBtu, marking a 2.84% increase from the previous rate of USD7.8749/MMBtu.
Electricity Generation Mix: The hydro-thermal generation mix remains unchanged at 20.90% hydro and 79.10% thermal, consistent with the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) of 2025.
These careful analyses have guided PURC’s decision to lower tariffs while promoting sustainable and green energy initiatives in the country
