President Akufo-Addo does not have the right to choose his successor

You Cannot Tell Whom You Will Hand Over To – Mahama Tells Akufo-Addo

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that President Akufo-Addo does not have the right to choose his successor following the general elections.

Former President John Dramani Mahama emphasized that the president would have to hand over power to the person whom Ghanaians choose to lead them.

In reaction to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s adamant refusal to cede power to his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, this remark has been made.

In a speech to the chiefs and people of Wa, President Akufo-Addo thanked them for their support during his administration and told Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, the Paramount Chief of the Waala traditional area, that he planned to return with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, as his successor.

After introducing Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate, Mr. Mahama spoke to the Central Regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday, July 30, and reaffirmed that, should he win the upcoming election, President Akufo-Addo will be forced to hand over power to him.

Former President John Dramani Mahama emphasized his readiness to take on leadership if elected, as well as his belief in the strength of the popular vote.

“Please tell [President Akufo-Addo], it is not in his mouth to determine who he will hand over to. He should just promise that when the elections are held whoever wins he will hand over, but you can’t say you won’t hand over to John Mahama if the people of Ghana say John Mahama is who they want and they elect me, you will have to hand over to me,” he said.
